NEUROMAP RESOURCE

Educational psychologist vs child psychologist: which support does my child need?

Parents often search for a child psychologist when the underlying question is about learning, school functioning or assessment. The right professional depends on the question being asked.

The difference is the question, not just the title

Educational psychology focuses strongly on learning, cognition, educational functioning, school access and the relationship between a learner and their environment.

Child psychology can include broader emotional, behavioural or clinical concerns. In some situations both educational and clinical perspectives may be relevant.

When educational assessment may help

  • Progress does not match apparent ability.
  • Reading, maths, memory, processing or executive demands are affecting learning.
  • A school needs clearer evidence about strengths and support needs.
  • An existing report needs translating into practical school priorities.

When a clinical or medical pathway may be more appropriate

NeuroMap should not be used to replace clinical assessment where the main concern requires a regulated mental-health, medical or diagnostic pathway. The appropriate route depends on the individual concern and professional scope.
